The biomethane industrial partnership
On the occasion of the European Sustainable Energy Week, the European Commission presented the new industrial partnership dedicated to biomethane (BIP Europe) at an event attended by European Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans, European Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson and Harmen Dekker, CEO of EBA, the European Biogas Association.
The industrial partnership was announced at the presentation of the REPowerEu Plan with the aim of supporting the production target of 35 billion cubic metres of biomethane in Europe by 2030.
For Vice-President Timmermans, ‘with biomethane, we can replace fossil gas from Russia with local, sustainable and renewable gas. The biomethane industry partnership will be crucial to increase the production and use of biomethane across the EU”.
Commissioner Simson pointed out that “Europe has great potential for biomethane production. In the current energy supply crisis, we cannot allow this potential to go to waste”.
According to Harmen Dekker, ‘the biomethane industry partnership will be a decisive factor in Europe in driving joint efforts to overcome barriers to investment, production and use’.
All Member States are invited to join the partnership together with companies, industry associations, academia and organisations.
The technical kick-off of the project will take place on 25 October 2022.
