Study published by Ecofys: Gas for Climate: How gas can help to achieve the Paris Agreement target in an affordable way
Today, 22 February 2018, the Ecofys study commissioned by Gas for Climate has been presented. Gas for Climate is a consortium that brings together seven leading European companies in the natural gas transport (Snam, Enagás, Fluxys, Gasunie, GRTgaz, Open Grid Europe and TIGF) and two associations active in the renewable gas sector (Consorzio Italiano Biogas and European Biogas Association).
The study borns from the vision, shared by the CIB, that by 2050 all gas consumption within the European Union would be net zero carbon emissions. The results show that not only the initial idea is achievable, but that the gas produced from renewable sources, i.e. biomethane, used in existing infrastructures can play a key role in decarbonising the gas grid, also guaranteeing to Europe a saving of about 140 billions of euros per year.
