The Research and Development Area coordinates the drafting, organization, management and implementation of trials and projects (including pilot) at European, national and regional level.

The main aims are:

  • Improvement of the entire production process of biogas-biomethane;
  • Increase in plant yields;
  • Assessment of environmental impacts;
  • Assessment of the technical and economic feasibility of possible new biomass (e.g. algae) and new processes such as liquefaction of biomethane and Carbon Capture and Storage;
  • Permanent updating of the latest technologies and innovation for CIB Members;
  • Development, in collaboration with the affiliated companies, of innovative ideas and products, to be implemented at industrial scale.

The R&D Area is eager to develop new collaborations with consortium affiliates, as well as with new partners.

DO YOU HAVE INNOVATIVE IDEAS AND PRODUCTS ON WHICH TO ELABORATE A PROJECT?

In order to better target its activity and to involve the Members more effectively, CIB has launched a campaign aimed at:

  • identifying the main problems and/or production phases with greater margin of improvement, starting from the direct experiences of biogas plant operators;
  • writing a manual with the Best Available Technologies -BAT- for biogas and biomethane.

At the end of this activity, Ordinary Members will know the BATs, and Plant Makers and Supporters will have a further tool to focus their business.

Based on the indications raised in these early stages, workshops will be organized on major issues and emerging innovations. The R&D area offers its support in identifying, writing and managing research projects on these issues at European, national and regional level.

Research Centers and Universities will be invited to participate actively in the project. During Biogas Italy and via newsletter we will provide information about how to participate.

Through the R&D Area, CIB is currently participating in 3 projects funded by the Horizon 2020 program:

BIOSURF “BIOmethane as SUstainable and Renewable Fuel” is an European project with the primary goal of increasing biomethane production and use in Europe by removing non-technological barriers, as well as creating national registers.

ISAAC, “Increasing Social Awareness and ACceptance of biogas and biomethane”. The aim of this project is to build a communication model to disseminate the correct information about the biogas-biomethane production chain. A participatory process model will also be developed to reduce public abhorrence by involving all stakeholders.

SABANA “Sustainable Algae Biorefinery for Agriculture aNd Aquaculture” This is a project to develop a large-scale micro-algae biorefinery to produce, in addition to bio-fermenters and nutrients for aquaculture, biostimulants, biopesticides and feed additives using only marine water and nutrients from sewage and wastewater (sewage, pork, etc.).
